While enjoying Afro Punk Festivities this summer I had the pleasure of running into Cipriana Quann co-founder and editor in chief of Urban Bush Babes. While there, Cipriana gave me a piece of advice that has not only helped her to build her ever growing empire but may also be the key to obtaining any goal that we may set for ourselves.
If you are not familiar with Cipriana and her brand, she began her YouTube channel 2 years ago and focused mostly on the care and growth of her beautiful natural hair. I can remember the first video of hers that I saw. She was simply sitting on a couch with a friend walking us through their hair care process. Its crazy and exciting to see how much they've grown since then.
Now her brand has become more of a thread in the culture of the urban woman who's brave enough to step outside of society's box and find comfort in her own skin. The blog focuses on fashion, hair, art and culture, and over the years its caught the attention of main stage brands such as Vougue, HBO, Gap and others.
Only chatting for a minute, Cipriana gave me some sound advice, "Be consistent", she said. The two words stayed with me long after we'd parted ways. No matter the goal, being consistent is sometimes the obstacle that we all seem to stumble over at one point or another. Allowing our day to day lives to distract and deter us during our pursuit of success, we create excuses to support our inconsistencies.
We must admit that being inconsistent is pretty easy to do especially when you pair it with the false belief that success is measured by intelligence or birthright. But the truth is that for most people success, big or small, comes down to work ethic. And what makes for a healthy work ethic? Consistency!
Now, I'm not saying that its easy but its worth a shot and I believe there are 3 simple things to keep in mind while trying to master such an art.
1.Self Motivation: Self motivation is key in getting this whole idea off the ground. Rather it's reading daily affirmations, praying, chanting, or scrolling through #MotivationalMonday posts, this effort is needed to stay afloat in life.
2. One day at a time: Set short term goals for each day and focus on accomplishing only that. Takes steps towards meeting your overall goal. Biting off more than we can chew eventually, becomes overwhelming and leads to a world of excuses.
Which brings me to...
3.Accountability: Hold yourself accountable! No more excuses. Be honest with yourself about where you fell short and what improvements need to be made. But don't beat yourself up. Remember, tomorrow is a new beginning.
What was even more exciting than being able to tell Cipriana how much I admire her brand and congrats on the success, was that she was extremely kind. Passing along those two kind words of advice had the power to redirect the course of someones life that day. And I believe that she said it not only because she believes it but because she's lived it.
