Jesse Boykins III may have unknowingly moved heaven and earth Tuesday night [May 20, 2014] as he took the stage of the Knitting Factory, in Brooklyn, NY for his much anticipated “Love Apparatus” album release show.
If you’ve been on the JB3 team for a while now then you’re well aware of the beauty that simultaneously pours from his lips and soul during his performances. So, to hear such an extensive amount of passion complied into one miraculous breathtaking night came as no surprise unless you were a now starstruck newbie.
Lyrically speaking, Boykins’ spoke in tongues to the souls of lovers, romanticizing the journey of life, love, and revealing the intricacies of a woman’s heart and mind. Sultry and unforgiving the artist belted vocals with great range and a hypnotic allure that kept his traditionally stern New York audience engaged in participation.
Musically, much of the album is heavily produced by Machinedrum. Traces of dub step and soul artfully structure the album with mid-tempo and down beats accompanied by a house groove. Tracks like "4 U 2 B Free", "Plain" and "Before The Night is Thru" (one of the most danceable tracks on the album and a longtime favorite amongst cult followers) accurately display the true versatility of Boykins as an artist.
If you have yet to experience one of Boykins' high energy passion filled performances, there’s still time with two more shows scheduled in Philly and DC.
