Recently there has been a large hype over natural products, from natural hair care to natural skin care. Many people believe that products containing natural ingredients are better for the body, as does the owner of Brooklyn Flavors, Sophia Slyvester.
In 2006, Sophia began creating natural skincare products as her and children suffered from severe dry skin. She felt that the over the counter products were not helpful to the skin problems that her and her children were facing. The shop officially opened in the Prospect Heights area of Brooklyn in August 2013. Through loyal customers and word of mouth promotion, Brooklyn Flavors has become a success.
With this overwhelming interest in natural and organic products, there are many people out there who have the same opinion as Sophia, but there are a few skeptics. Before going into the skeptics, it is important to understand what makes a product natural. There is great confusion between the word natural and organic and businesses are claiming that their products are natural, when in fact they are not. A product is considered natural when it contains ingredients that come from nature and does not have to go through regulations to be considered natural. Because of the lack of regulation, companies can have a low percent of ingredients that are considered natural and still be able to advertise their product as a natural product. Natural products usually do not include ingredients petrochemicals, paragons, sodium laurel and laureth sulfates, phthalates, synthetic dyes and synthetic colors.
What makes this shop unique is that along with being skin care friendly, it is also neighborhood friendly. Each of the different flavors is named after neighborhoods in Brookyln, hence the name “Brooklyn Flavors.” You can experience the scents of Bed-Stuy, Canarsie, Fort Greene, Crown Heights, and many other neighborhoods. Who wouldn’t love to smell like the concrete jungle itself? From jasmine to papaya, Brooklyn Flavors will have you falling in love with New York City all over again. Sophia uses all natural ingredients when making her products. Right now she mainly sells skin care products, but this August she plans on starting a natural hair care line. She believes that the mistakes most people are having within their skincare is that they are using products that are not natural. To Sophia, “Everything is on this earth is here for a reason and we are to use it but we have to use it mindfully.”
According to dermatologist Joel Schessinger, the face of Lovelyskin.com, natural products are not necessarily better for the skin. Critics claim that there is no major difference between the effects of natural skin care products and synthetic skin care products. Natural does not always mean better, as people perceive. As always when trying a new skin care product, be sure to understand what results you are trying to achieve. Are you looking for something that won't irritate your skin, gives you better results and healthier skin, or has less impact on the environment? Do you want a combination of all those elements? Try these products for about a month to determine whether the product is right for you. If you are interested in saving the environment and skipping the parabens added in products to pro-long shelf life, then you should definitely try natural products. If these are not of importance to you, then you do not have to necessarily do away with synthetic products.
When deciding whether you want to use a natural product vs a man-made product, you must decide what is important to you. Natural products are great because they help the environment. All the pesticides that are used are not going for the environment and are especially not good for our immune systems. A lot the chemicals added on plants to prolong shelf life have been said to have cancer causing agents. Regardless if it may be carcinogenic, these additives are toxic for the body. Some studies suggest that while man-made products work faster, and may seem more effective, these products can actually cause damage to your skin throughout time. Natural products have the ability to clean and heal the skin inside and out. Pro natural product users claim that man-made products cause allergic reactions to the skin. They fail to mention that people are allergic to natural ingredients. Some ingredients that people are typically allergic to are tea tree oil, feverfew, lavender, and jasmine.
But all allergies aside, if you're looking for natural products without all the additives containing essential oils, great fragrance and a hand crated touch, a skin care line such as Brooklyn Flavors makes a wonderful option. If ever in Brooklyn stop by BK Flavors on 820 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238 or you can find their blissful products online at www.brooklynflavors.com.
